Cosmetic dentistry veneers are the single most requested procedure by dental tourists. The promise is irresistible: a "Hollywood Smile" in a week, at a fraction of London or New York prices. And for many patients, veneers deliver exactly that β€” a genuine transformation.

But veneers are also where we see the most problems in our treatment plan audits. Plans that don't document whether conservative alternatives were considered. Full sets of 20 veneers proposed without any record of why each tooth requires one. This guide gives you the information you need before you commit.

What are cosmetic dentistry veneers?

Veneers are thin shells β€” typically porcelain or composite resin β€” bonded to the front surface of your teeth to improve their appearance. They're one of the core cosmetic dentistry services, used to correct discolouration, chips, gaps, mild misalignment, and uneven tooth shape.

Porcelain veneers

The gold standard in cosmetic dentistry. Porcelain veneers are custom-fabricated in a lab, highly durable (10–15 years with care), stain-resistant, and closely mimic natural tooth translucency. They require tooth preparation β€” your cosmetic dentist removes a thin layer of enamel to accommodate the veneer.

Composite veneers

Applied directly to the tooth using a resin material, composite veneers are less expensive, can be done in a single visit, and require minimal or no tooth preparation. They're less durable (5–7 years) and more prone to staining, but they're reversible β€” which makes them a sensible first step if you're unsure.

Zirconia veneers

Increasingly popular in Turkish cosmetic dentistry clinics, zirconia veneers are extremely strong but can appear more opaque than porcelain. They're sometimes used where strength matters more than translucency β€” but they shouldn't be the default choice for front teeth.

Our recommendation: If your natural teeth are healthy but discoloured or slightly uneven, consider teeth whitening and composite bonding first. These are conservative, reversible cosmetic dentistry options. Porcelain veneers involve removing enamel that doesn't grow back. Make sure you've exhausted less invasive alternatives before committing to irreversible prep.

The "Hollywood Smile" problem

Many cosmetic dentistry clinics β€” particularly those targeting dental tourists β€” market "Hollywood Smile" packages. Typically, this means 20 porcelain veneers covering all visible teeth. The cosmetic dentistry prices seem incredible: Β£3,000–£5,000 for what would cost Β£15,000+ in the UK.

Here's what we see in our audits: roughly 40% of "full set" veneer plans we review contain no documentation of why each individual tooth requires a veneer. No record of alternatives discussed. No note of which teeth could have been treated conservatively. The number might be right β€” but if the clinic can't explain why, that's a transparency problem.

⚠ The irreversible truth: Once a tooth is prepared for a veneer, that tooth will always need a veneer. The enamel removal is permanent. If a cosmetic dentistry clinic is proposing to prep 20 healthy teeth when fewer would achieve the same result, that's a red flag β€” and exactly the kind of thing our treatment plan audit catches.
